Not strictly speaking the maps fault, but that's the experience they offer. These maps all rely on wide exploration, often back and forth to repetitive spots to pick up various items, and most of you will playing almost certainly have no clue as to what's going on, what should be done next, with the occasional jump/bang cutscene and soundbite along with accidentally finding a mission item without noticing. The larger the player count the worse it got. I think a big problem with them was they were terrible to play in public. The minigame would have been better with an ending instead of a continuous loop of repeating missions "until you're bored". Personally I liked the awakening ( RE1 ) and covert ops ( RECO ) was OK, but didn't think much of Aftermath or Outbreak.
